I posted this in the DC others forum, but am posting my thoughts as relates to the (positive) impact this could have on "Smallville".

OK, while I personally am not inclined to, everyone who wants to do their evil laughs at Al & Miles please do so now.

There we go. Now, I think that this is a good thing for "Smallville" for a couple of reasons. First thing, is that the "Smallville" & "Supernatural" combo on Thursday nights seemed a pretty good pairing for the WB, so that won't be threatened now. Second, and most important, is that Al & Miles will not be trying to balance two projects, so "Smallville" should get the proper focus. Now I know there are many of you who think that the less Al & Miles are influencing the show the better, BUT think about this. Not only would they have been spending more time on "Mercy Reef", but so would their best writers and crew. Which quite possibily could explain while the usually spectacular "Smallville" season finale was this year, a total mess.
Normally if Al & Miles don't write the finales or premieres, it's been the two who are IMO the show's best writers - Slavkin & Swimmer. Plus Greg Beeman, one of the best directors, was for certain off working on the "Mercy Reef" pilot. Al had said around "Reckoning" that their time (he & Miles) would be spent mainly on the new show as "Smallville" was established and could be run by existing staff. They chose Soulders & Peterson to take care of that for the finale of Season 5...and they failed miserably. The good news is that with "Mercy Reef" 'drowned' so to speak, the best writing talent like Slavkin & Swimmer are safely and 100% in "Smallville".
Word is however that the network wasn't too happy with most of their pilots when they were completed, and many high profile projects --most notably the Aquaman centered show Mercy Reef-- have not been picked up. It is expected that only two new series, the Donnie Wahlberg Fugitive-esque Runaway and the Girlfriends spin-off The Game will be on The CW's fall schedule.
